The nail plate is stacked layers of keratin. Acetone breaks the bonds between them indiscriminately, so after a long soak the surface comes away in sheets when scraped — which is what people are describing when they say gel ruined their nails. I had been soaking gel off in acetone foils every three weeks and scraping whatever was left, and my nails had become so thin they bent under the pressure of a keyboard.
